Focke-Wulf 190 D-9, Papagei Staffel of Jagdverband 44
April and Early May 1945, pilot probably Hptm. Klaus Faber.
In the closing weeks of WW II, the Luftwaffe was still operating a few scattered ME-262 jet units. The jets were vulnerable to conventional fighters during landing and take-off so their bases were heavily guarded by anti-aircraft batteries and also what was probably the best German propeller fighter of the war- the FW-190, in its latest version- the inline-engined D-9. Operating in the Munich area, these Focke-Wulfs had their undersurfaces painted red as an identification measure to prevent their own anti-aircarft guns from firing at them. Here we see one of the red-bottomed shepherds keeping close tabs on a landing ME-262.
The original painting was a winner in the 1991 EAA art competition
and spent a year on display in Oshkosh Wisconsin.
All our giclée prints are printed with high-quality fade-resistant inks on archival paper. Each print is individually signed by Robert and an identifying certificate is included.
