The Fokker DR.I Triplane may be among the most famous of WW I airplanes but there were other triplanes as well. This experimental Fokker V.7S was powered by the equally experimental Siemens-Halske Sh.III counter-rotary engine, an 11 cylinder monster made for rapid climbing. This airplane in combination with this high torque engine swinging a meaty four- bladed propeller could outclimb almost anything in its day. The painting depicts comparison tests over Germany in January 1918 with a standard DR.I in the background starting to sputter and drop away while the V.7S is still going.
Commissioned to be used and first published on the cover of "Over the Front" vol.22 no.3 fall 07 "Fokker V.7 Experimental Triplane"
