In 1928 Pilot/designer Jimmy Wedell teamed up with financial backer Harry Williams, forming Wedell-Williams Inc. In 1931 they ventured into racing and coming in second place in the Thompson Trophy Race was an encouragement. In the 1932 races for the Thompson Trophy, Wedell Williams Racers #92, #44, and #121 came in second, third, and fourth flown by, respectively James Haizlip, Jimmy Wedell himself, and the flamboyant Roscoe Turner.
